Into the Wilderness

For me this painting really hits home. I spent many years in my lifetime backpacking, and as I would begin any number of journeys into the mountains I always felt as if I were coming home.

INTO THE WILDERNESS
Into the Wilderness | 36″ x 48″ | Acrylic on Canvas

On my recent trip to the Sierras this past fall we drove up to Glacier Lodge. This lodge was made famous by renown artist, Edgar Payne, who often stayed at the lodge and would horse-pack in from there to a group of lakes to paint in the great outdoors.

I arrived to this place in the late afternoon and hiked my way in just a bit. Standing along this trail gave me the feeling that I must come back to venture further down the trail. I wouldn’t be satisfied with just a few photos. Using the photo references of my experience from that day to create this painting left me with the same feeling I had standing on that trail, a deep desire to make it back to the wilderness and complete the journey that I was not able to finish at that time. Backpacking has a way of always stirring up a wonder of whats around the next bend in the trail, just as this painting leaves you with a feeling of what’s ahead as well!

Into the Wilderness is one of many new paintings of my latest experience in the beautiful Sierra Mountains.

Back-to-Back

It was back-to-back shows this past holiday weekend. Friday night, the 12th, Lynne and I attended Sebastopol Center for the Arts annual members show. It was a first for me at SCA, and wow, what an outstanding group of talented artists. So proud to have my work hanging at this venue. Looking forward to more events with this bunch in 2015.

On Saturday, the 13th, I headed out for Clarksburg, on the Sacramento Delta, hoping the torrents of rain wouldn’t flood the valley floor, along with the highways and byways to getting there. Fortunately, the levels remained safe and Rendevous Winery hosting the Second Saturday Art Walk was still open for business. Seems the storm didn’t keep art and wine lovers away from exploring the area.

As the featured artist I held a painting demonstration throughout the day. Meeting the public and working with the winery staff is always the best part of getting out and about for a show.

Well, I guess this brings me to the end with regard to shows for 2014. You’ll have to keep your eyes wide open for upcoming news and events as there are many opportunities this coming year. It’ll all be posted on the Events Schedule and News page tabs here on this site,

Happy Holidays to All,

Rush Creek

RUSH CREEK
Rush Creek | 36″ x  58″ | Acrylic on Canvas

High in the Eastern slope of the Sierra Mountains is a beautiful stream flowing out of Silver Lake known as Rush Creek. It is apart of an area known as the June Lake Loop located just north of Mammoth, California.

Teeming with brown trout Rush Creek is a favorite hot spot for fly fisherman also looking for awesome views of towering mountains that rise high above stream and lake into the Ansel Adams Wilderness. It is one of my favorites as it winds its way along the shore lined Aspen groves. I love this spot because it offers something of everything; Aspens, rivers, and mountains. The angled morning light creates great shadows and contrast against the back-lit Aspens. This river’s meandering pace allows for incredible reflections upon the surface of the water.

Inspired by my recent visit during this years Annual Fall Mountain Tour, Rush Creek, a large format, 36″ x 58″ painting, captures all that is offered here in one of California’s premiere mountain areas. It is definitely one of my favorite spots in the Sierras.

Journey to Fall Color

Becoming Inspired

As a landscape artist inspiration is an important aspect to creating great paintings. Going to your subject matter allows you to absorb your surroundings and the art of observation takes over. My greatest love in nature is the mountains so it makes sense for me to paint them; and for me going there is like coming home. Inspiration creates passion, and passion creates great art. So, get out and surround yourself with the subject that you love.

My October Fall Mountain Tour to the Eastern slope of the Sierras was very successful. As you can see from these photos the fall color from the Aspens did not disappoint. Of course every year is different as fall color depends on dropping temperatures as Aspen’s grow at high altitudes. The first week in October seems to be the best time to go.

New Prospects & A Little Fun

Wow, talk about a fun weekend mixing business with a little pleasure as plans are in the works to showcase Jim’s vineyard art at a new venue located along California’s Delta Region. Rendez-vous Winery housed at the Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg, California, in collaboration with Art Obsessions Gallery will install a lovely new art gallery with plans to host Wine & Art Thursday Evenings. This event will showcase gallery artists as they meet-n-greet the public for a little wine tasting and art talk.

Following our business meeting we took an afternoon stroll around this amazing historic site. A little later we found ourselves winding our way down the levee roads visiting little delta river towns.  At one point we arrived at Steamboat Slough and took a very short ride on one of California’s two ferries, the “J-Mack”, still in operation today. And, yes, paid for by the good ole’ California taxpayer.

Anyway, be sure to check out the photo gallery of this days event posted below and remember to watch for new posts regarding Jim’s October 23rd showing.
