Into the Wilderness

For me this painting really hits home. I spent many years in my lifetime backpacking, and as I would begin any number of journeys into the mountains I always felt as if I were coming home.

INTO THE WILDERNESS
Into the Wilderness | 36″ x 48″ | Acrylic on Canvas

On my recent trip to the Sierras this past fall we drove up to Glacier Lodge. This lodge was made famous by renown artist, Edgar Payne, who often stayed at the lodge and would horse-pack in from there to a group of lakes to paint in the great outdoors.

I arrived to this place in the late afternoon and hiked my way in just a bit. Standing along this trail gave me the feeling that I must come back to venture further down the trail. I wouldn’t be satisfied with just a few photos. Using the photo references of my experience from that day to create this painting left me with the same feeling I had standing on that trail, a deep desire to make it back to the wilderness and complete the journey that I was not able to finish at that time. Backpacking has a way of always stirring up a wonder of whats around the next bend in the trail, just as this painting leaves you with a feeling of what’s ahead as well!

Into the Wilderness is one of many new paintings of my latest experience in the beautiful Sierra Mountains.

Journey to Fall Color

Becoming Inspired

As a landscape artist inspiration is an important aspect to creating great paintings. Going to your subject matter allows you to absorb your surroundings and the art of observation takes over. My greatest love in nature is the mountains so it makes sense for me to paint them; and for me going there is like coming home. Inspiration creates passion, and passion creates great art. So, get out and surround yourself with the subject that you love.

My October Fall Mountain Tour to the Eastern slope of the Sierras was very successful. As you can see from these photos the fall color from the Aspens did not disappoint. Of course every year is different as fall color depends on dropping temperatures as Aspen’s grow at high altitudes. The first week in October seems to be the best time to go.

Nationally Emerging Artists–discover today’s emerging artists

There can be many stages in the development of artists’ careers. Oftentimes, artists begin by both taking classes and showing their work on a local level, perhaps in local art centers, coffee shops, or weekend art festivals. They might then move on to having a more regional profile, in which they get the opportunity to be represented by a gallery in a nearby metropolitan area or have their work accepted into larger shows. And then, at some point down what may be a long road, they find themselves emerging onto the national art scene. These are the artists we feature in the following pages—we hope you enjoy their work.
